My favorite Al songs have changed a bit since July 2023, so I've made an official update list for it. Without further ado...
"Genius in France", "Slime Creatures from Outer Space", and "I Think I'm a Clone Now" keep their placements. "Hardware Store" is now number 4, "UHF" is now number 5, "Nature Trail to Hell" is now number 7 (RIP!), "Virus Alert" is now number 8, "It's All About the Pentiums" is now number 9, and "Polka Your Eyes Out" is now number 10 (also RIP!).
This leaves us with the new number 3..."Mr. Popeil"!! Or as I like to call it, "an advertisement so great it makes you listen to the B-52's". I mean it! Just listen to Al-as-Popeil shill various As Seen on TV products! Watch for the inspiration from the band he's parodying! Marvel at the empty, consumerist life of the character singing this! Set it (on Spotify) and JUST DANG FORGET IT!!
(The point I'm trying to make, of course, is that style parodies tend to be pretty damn good.)
And, since the original list didn't have one of these... (ahem!)
"Livin' in the Fridge", "The Check's in the Mail", "Tacky", "You Make Me", "Gravy on You", aaaaannnnnddddd "Albuquerque"!
"Genius in France", "Slime Creatures from Outer Space", "Hardware Store", "UHF", and "Virus Alert" keep their placements. "Polkarama!" is back on the list at number 10, "Polka Your Eyes Out" is now number 9, "It's All About the Pentiums" is now number 8 (with "Virus Alert"), "I Think I'm a Clone Now" is now number 7, and "Nature Trail to Hell" is now number 5 (with "UHF").
Our new number 6 is "Dare to be Stupid", the dumbest (affectionate) avant-garde anthem ever made. With a rockin' instrumental and even more rockin' lyrics, this song's got it all. Seriously, Mothersbaugh said he was jealous he didn't come up with it first. It's also a good reminder to make stupid things sometimes, like, say, a sequel to a late 80s cult classic with a probably complicated plot (uh, not that I would know from personal experience or anything...).
The only one I have to add to this list is "Gee, I'm a Nerd". What can I say? It's relatable.
I've decided to do something incredible...make this a top 15 list instead! The only change is Polkarama is now number 11, with "Hooked on Polkas" as number 10.
Number 12 is "Here's Johnny" (surprisingly angelic at times!), number 13 is "Livin' in the Fridge" (underrated, if brief, music video!), number 14 is "The Check's in the Mail" (I'm a sucker for this song, get it?), and number 15 is "Tacky" (I appreciate his boldness!). No Honorable Mentions here, because there's otherwise no changes.
Come back home, won't you?
